Director and screenwriter of The Last Execution, Franziska Stünkel, will be in attendance at the German Film Festival in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Her film is based on a true story of the last death sentence in the socialist DDR (East Germany). It premiered at Filmfest Munich 2021 and was awarded with the prize for new German cinema. Stünkels’ work is also influenced by her work as a photo artist.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
"In NAHSCHUSS, I wanted to examine the question of how political systems can control and manipulate people, and how individuals behave within such systems. This film is all about trust. Trust is always also a leap of faith. Trust can be abused – by people, but also by political systems".
Tempted by the offer of a prestigious professorship, ambitious scientist Franz Walter is convinced to work for the GDR's Stasi in 1981 East Berlin but is soon accused of espionage in this gripping historical drama starring Lars Eidinger.
